To some, a painting workshop immediately sounds like “help, I can only draw stick figures,” while to others it’s “finally, I get to mess around with paint again without having to explain myself.” And that’s exactly why a painting workshop at artistic locations throughout the Netherlands is so wonderful. Because whether you’re a hidden Van Gogh or someone who’s proud of being able to draw a straight line: everyone belongs. Imagine: you start in Amsterdam, somewhere in the Jordaan. Old buildings, crooked sidewalks, and a studio where the daylight falls just right. The instructor says something like, “Let the surroundings inspire you,” while you’re mainly thinking: how do I mix skin tones without it looking like carrot puree? Meanwhile, paintings emerge that no one would have thought beforehand would ever be allowed to hang on a wall. Including that one piece everyone says, “Yeah… this is very expressive.” Then on to Rotterdam, where art is just a bit bigger, bolder, and less forgiving. Street art, concrete, and guts. Here, paint is allowed to drip. It’s even required. Someone shouts that his canvas has turned “industrial,” when really he just used too much water. No one corrects him. This is Rotterdam. Here, a mistake is simply called a stylistic choice.
