A workshop in Leiden combines the rich history of the city of keys. This refers to the keys found in the city's coat of arms. Leiden is vibrant and has many distinctive characteristics. Not only did many members of the Dutch royal family study at Leiden University (oldest University in our country) but alumni have won more than 15 Nobel Prizes. Leiden also has many connections to Dutch history in terms of creativity. Jan Steen, Rembrandt and several other famous painters were born here. Do you spontaneously feel like a creative workshop in Leiden or its surroundings? Other attractions include the oldest theater in the Netherlands (Leidse Schouwburg), the wall poems written in 101 languages that can be found throughout the city or the more than 85 bridges across all the canals. Maybe you can add 1 of these elements to your workshop in Leiden or surroundings. Do you have some time left? Then walk the outer canals of over 6 kilometers. So that your activity in Leiden is going to be unforgettable is largely up to you. Have fun.
A workshop in Leiden usually begins very culturally and responsibly. People walk through the historic streets, admire the canals and pretend it's going to be a relaxed, neat day. About an hour and a half later, the same group is laughing loudly on a terrace while someone explains completely seriously why his cocktail had "really subtle flavors." That's Leiden.
After all, this city has everything you need for a successful group outing. Old canals, cozy courtyards, student atmosphere and terraces everywhere where you linger much easier than originally intended. Leiden feels like history and cosiness have decided to just make one big city.
Workshops therefore perfectly fit the atmosphere of the city.
Creative workshops do remarkably well here, probably because everyone in Leiden automatically thinks they have to add something intellectual or artistic. People who normally say "I'm not creative at all" suddenly stand here fanatically combining colors as if they have missed out on a hidden career as an artist.
Cocktail workshops, meanwhile, remain a classic. Especially since college towns automatically provide people who structurally overestimate their own bartending skills. There is enthusiastic shaking, recipes are completely ignored and at least one cocktail is guaranteed to be created that looks like it should actually be banned.
Cooking workshops are also ideal in Leiden. Cooking together sounds very organized and mature beforehand, until it turns out that half the group is mostly busy drinking wine while one person completely derails in his role as chef. Meanwhile, discussions arise about spices, timing and why someone thought "extra garlic" was ever a bad idea.
What makes Leiden extra fun for a workshop day, of course, is the city itself. The canals give the entire city center a cozy atmosphere where even a simple walk feels like an activity. Around the Beestenmarkt and the Nieuwe Rijn there is almost always a pleasant atmosphere. Especially when the terraces fill up and people sit outside en masse as if no one ever wants to go inside.
Also, the famous Leiden courtyards remain great to wander around in between. At least, until someone in your group starts talking way too loud and the peace completely disappears.
And of course a walk along the Burcht should not be missed. Not only because of the view, but especially because every group will automatically take group photos where at least one person always looks just wrong.
For groups who want to relax in between, the parks along the canals are perfect. However, "relaxing" during workshops usually proves impossible as soon as old stories come up that make everyone laugh way too hard.
The great thing about Leiden is that the city feels compact and lively at the same time. Everything is close together, making it easy to walk from workshop to terrace and from terrace to dinner without fuss. Before you know it, a simple afternoon activity has turned into a complete evening full of spontaneous plans.
And let's be honest: the student atmosphere just makes Leiden extra cozy. People are relaxed, terraces stay full for a long time and everywhere there is that feeling that the evening has actually just begun.
A workshop in Leiden is not only about being creative. It is about laughing together, enjoying the atmosphere and witnessing how an ordinary afternoon in a historic city imperceptibly changes into a day that will be talked about for a long time.
