The town of Baarn was known as early as the seventeenth century as a rich commuter for our growing capital. The peat-rich Soest was a mecca for peat cutters. And Veenendaal was known for its tobacco companies. Later, its central rural location became the reason that many headquarters of national organizations moved to the Amersfoort area. Accessibility by rail and highway was greatly improved and the city grew considerably from an economic point of view as well. From the Koppelpoort you can walk straight into the historic city center, where narrow streets and canals naturally lead you to the Tower of Our Lady. This tower, also called the "Lange Jan", literally towers above everything else.
