Unlike the other major cities in North Holland, such as Amsterdam and Alkmaar, Haarlem is known primarily for its services and much less for its industry or trade. From 1200 to 1600, the city was best known for producing textiles, such as cloth, linen and wool. In the Middle Ages, the water from the Spaarne was used to produce beer. From the early 19th century, industry in particular became important to Haarlem. Many companies established themselves in the city center and along the water (the Spaarne). Around 2007, a good sixty thousand people were employed in Haarlem.
